Touchwood Trading opened its doors in March '05. In doing so we are hoping it has also opened Oban, Argyll and the Islands up to new ideas. We are sourcing, as much as we can, tradefair handcrafted treasures from around the world.
Touchwood carries a varied range of stock. We are far more than a furniture warehouse. We have stunning hand beaded bags from China, jewellery from India and Spain, soft furnishings from Nepal and much much more!
Our handcrafted solid wood furniture is imported from Jogjakarta. Jogjakarta is situated on the small island of Java, which is tucked in behind the larger island of Sumatra, therefore protecting it from the devastation left by the Tsunami in Jan '05.
Java is a beautiful fertile volcanic island which is ideal for growing the three types of hardwood which are used; teak, the main wood, acacia and mahogany. All our furniture is made from sustainable wood. The Javanese government keep a very tight security on the ancient teak forests, which in the past have been sadly brutalised.
No one is more aware of materials having to be sustainable and to preserve what's left of the magnificent teaks than our contact, and of course ourselves. In our last visit we were fortunate enough to visit these plantations. This gave us peace of mind that what we are bringing to you is top quality plantation wood.
We are hoping to widen our search in the future so that we can vary our stock. We try to ensure that each piece is individual thus giving you confidence that you have purchased a one-off item.
It is so refreshing to see skills being used that have been passed down through generations. Hands on skills that are, sadly, nearly lost in this country and have been replaced by machines.
Thanks to these skills and craftsmanship, Touchwood is filled with goodies and gifts steeped in history, which ooze character and have a sense of purpose. This is a powerful combination which gives Touchwood that WOW factor. This is something that can't be found in mass produced goods.
But don't take our word for it - come along and experience it for yourself.
